From Washington State to Washington DC: our planned route covers approximately 5000 kilometres of riding on sealed roads, rail trails and dirt tracks. We have chosen a route which allows us to experience 10 states of America along roads which are as safe as possible for our family.
Starting in Anacortes we will be following the Adventure Cycling Association Northern Tier route through Washington, Montana and North Dakota. This takes us up and over the Sierra Cascades and Rocky Mountains, cycling through National Parks and glacial valleys. From there we will head across the broad expanse of the Great Plains and cross the Mississippi River.
Our route then traverses many rail trails through Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. We will also be following sections of the North Lakes and Lake Erie Connector Adventure Cycling maps and taking a couple of ferries across the Great Lakes.
We aim to use back country roads through Ohio to reach Pittsburgh and then tackle the Great Allegheny Passage and Chesapeake and Ohio canal trails through Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia. This takes us through a region of the Appalachian Mountains all the way to our finish line in Washington DC where we will celebrate with donuts.
